New Legal Clinic to Improve Education and Serve the Poor |
The Cahul Legal Clinic will provide socially disadvantaged people with pro bono legal services, ranging from legal consultations to filing administrative acts, lawsuits, and court representation. The clinic is integrated within the Legal Department of the Cahul State University and participation in the Clinic is being offered as an elective course in the university curriculum.
The American Bar Association/Rule of Law Initiative (ABA/ROLI) and the Association “Pro-Cetatean” of Cahul, in cooperation with the Cahul State University, will open the Legal Clinic in Cahul on December 3, 2008. The opening of the clinic is being made possible with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development.
The clinic will consist of approximately 25 law students who will work under the clinic’s administrator and two supervisors. Students will have the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they learn in class by providing legal consultations. In addition, the clinic will help educate the citizens of Moldova about their legal rights and duties by publishing legal materials for the public.
The clinic will be a legal resource in the Cahul region and contribute to strengthening the existing network of legal aid centers throughout Moldova. The Cahul Legal Clinic is the third clinic that ABA/ROLI has helped open in Moldova. The first, the Comrat Legal Clinic, was established in October 2003. Besides the Cahul and Comrat clinics, ABA/ROLI supports a Legal Clinic at the Balti State University.
